Message from the President

Albufeira 2026: commitment to well-being and sporting excellence
It is with immense pride and responsibility that we assume the title "Albufeira European City of Sport 2026".
It will be a landmark year for our collective history. A year to reinforce the image of a municipality that is committed to promoting physical activity, a year to celebrate the best values of sport, a year to involve everyone – clubs, schools, parishes, Albufeira residents and visitors – in more active and healthy daily lives.
Because, more than a title, this award reflects our commitment to the health, inclusion and quality of life of all who live in and visit our municipality. We are aware that sport is much more than exercise: it is essential to physical, mental and social well-being and is a tool for education and citizenship that teaches children and young people the values of respect, discipline and team spirit, essential for socialization and community life.
In Albufeira, we have all the conditions for practicing outdoor sports – on the beach, in the countryside, and in urban parks – as well as quality indoor infrastructure to host everything from major international events to training and competitions for local and regional clubs, activities for children, young people, seniors, and people with different abilities and physical conditions.
Albufeira offers conditions for everyone, and our goal is clear: to value both the high performance of federated athletes and school and associative sports, as well as informal practice, ensuring that sport is, in fact, for everyone.
In 2026, we will give the stage to Spectacle Sport, hosting dozens of competitive events and the experimentation of numerous modalities, but we will also make public spaces and the landscape conducive to more dynamic, healthy, and supportive behaviors, inviting everyone to change lifestyles.
We are ready to project the name of our city as a European reference for dynamism and fair play. Let the games begin!
Rui Cristina,
Mayor of Albufeira
