OPENING GALA DRAWS 1,500 RESIDENTS TO LAUNCH "EUROPEAN CITY OF SPORT 2026"
Around 1,500 people gathered at Pavilhão Desportivo de Albufeira to mark the official launch of the "Albufeira European City of Sport 2026" program. The Opening Gala took place last Saturday (28) and featured a parade of local sports clubs and associations. In his closing remarks, Mayor Rui Cristina expressed pride in kicking off what he described as a "highly ambitious" program.
The venue was packed. The evening marked the start of a year fully dedicated to sport. It was a celebration many in the community will not forget.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Mayor Rui Cristina paid tribute to his predecessor, José Carlos Rolo, who passed away in early February.
Several local artists took to the stage. César Matoso and Carolina Leote performed the official anthem, "O Desporto Aqui Perdura" ("Sport Lives On Here"). Filipa Sousa also performed, delivering a heartfelt tribute to Albufeira's fishing community.
Hosted by João Manzarra and Maria João Costa, the gala featured a series of standout performances. Local dance groups LUEL and SOUL impressed the audience. Athletes from Acro Al-Buhera delivered a dynamic acrobatic gymnastics display. The evening also included a parade showcasing all sports clubs and associations from across the municipality.
Gian Lupattelli, President of ACES Europe, opened the round of official speeches. He expressed confidence in Albufeira's ability to live up to the title. Secretary of State for Sport Pedro Dias highlighted the importance of investing in physical activity and expanding access to sport across the entire community.
Before the event concluded, Mayor Rui Cristina returned to the stage. He spoke proudly of launching a "very ambitious" program and praised the strong identity of the local community.
"We want to strengthen the Albufeira brand in the hearts of our people," he said. "With the courage that helps us overcome challenges, and the ambition that drives us to seize opportunities."
The official "Albufeira European City of Sport 2026" calendar includes more than 400 initiatives throughout the year. The city will host several major competitions, including the finish of a stage of the 87th Volta a Portugal cycling race.
