"More than one sporting activity per day" is the promise made by the Mayor of Albufeira during the presentation of the "Albufeira European City of Sport 2026" Events Program to the media, which took place on February 20th at the Albufeira Sports Pavilion.
This initiative marks a year entirely dedicated to promoting physical activity and sport in the municipality, with a vast calendar that includes more than 400 sporting events throughout the year.
The program includes competitions, meetings, and activities in multiple sports, ranging from cycling to athletics, including basketball, football, nautical and sea-related sports, and much more. The events are held in partnership with local sports associations and clubs, allowing for a broad and diverse offering, aligned with the motto "Sport for All," which ensures the existence of activities aimed at the entire community.
In the presentation session, Rui Cristina emphasized that this title represents "a unique opportunity to affirm Albufeira as an active, inclusive territory that promotes healthy lifestyles" and also highlighted the structuring role of sport in the formation of the municipality's youth, as an instrument for personal, social, and civic development.
The mayor also announced that the Opening Gala "Albufeira European City of Sport 2026" will take place on February 28th at 5:00 PM, marking the inaugural moment of this cycle. "It will be the great milestone and the starting point of a series of events that will certainly project the good name of Albufeira beyond its borders, in a ceremony meticulously prepared, worthy of the distinction and true to the identity of the people of Albufeira," he concluded.
